Christchurch police investigate baby’s serious, unexplained injuries

Police are investigating after a Christchurch baby was hospitalised with serious, unexplained injuries.

The baby was admitted to Christchurch Hospital on Monday, and police were called soon after.

“Officers are undertaking enquiries to establish how the infant came to be injured, including speaking with family members,” said Detective Senior Sergeant Craig Johnson.

“Residents of Barbadoes Street may see a police presence in the coming days, as officers conduct area enquiries.”

A neighbour, who the Herald has agreed not to name, described the incident as “disturbing”.

She said a couple lived at the property with the child, recalling how she would often see a woman out walking with a baby.

This morning, there was no police presence at the back-section Barbadoes St townhouse.

Another neighbour recalled the moment police flooded the area, as the quiet block of homes was suddenly overtaken by emergency services.

They said the neighbourhood could be “interesting” at times, but added that nothing of this scale had happened there before.
