Child in serious condition after being hit by car

A child hit by a car in the Waikato town of Matamata today is in hospital.

The child was struck just before 3pm on State Highway 27 in the town centre, Inspector Kerry Watson of northern police communications said.

The child was in a serious condition, Mr Watson said.

Traffic in the area was extremely congested and motorists faced delays while police conduct a scene examination.

Diversions had been put in place.
