Celtic coach Dayle Clarkson says versatility has been a key component in her team's strong start to the 2007 season in Netball Wairarapa's premier one competition.
Going into tomorrow's match with Harcourts 2, Celtic have the perfect record of three wins from three games and against a Harcourts 2 team at
the very bottom of the points table that should become four from four.
Having the luxury of a number of players who are capable of playing in two or three positions with equal efficiency gives Clarkson several options at both the attacking and defensive ends of the court.
"It's nice to be able to move players around without having to worry about having an adverse effect on the team performance," she said.
In the important area of goal shooting, for example, Celtic have at least four players who can do a decent job there, the mother-and-daughter combination of Katie and Hope Philips, Perri Tatana and Tiffany Paku.
But all four can also be relied on to made a big impression in other areas as well and their versatility is matched by team-mates Jasmine Hoani, Naomi Reiri, Janine Southey, Logan Karaitiana, Jaimie Reiri and Tansy Kirk.
Clarkson is confident Celtic can push hard for premier one honours this season but emphasises the first objective is to make the top six sides who will contest the championship proper.
"You can get teams who start well and fall away and that's something we need to avoid," she said. "It's still early days yet so looking too far ahead doesn't make sense."
Celtic share the competition lead on 12pts with defending premier one champions Harcourts, who should be tested in tonight's match at the Genesis Recreation Centre by Gladstone All Blacks. The latter suffered their first loss of the season when they went down to Sports Arena Carterton last weekend but have the experience to bounce back quickly from that defeat.
Sports Arena Carterton, for their part, will be wanting to prove their latest victory was no fluke when they take on St Matthews Collegiate, also at the rec centre tonight. The students will probably look to play the game at pace but will want to avoid turnovers against a Sports Arena Carterton side with the skill to capitalise.
Another interesting fixture should be that between Wairarapa College and Salute Greytown at Colombo road tomorrow. There is just the one point separating them on the points table with Wairarapa College having five and Greytown four and whoever wins this one will be doing themselves a big favour in the battle for top six positions.
Also at Colombo road tomorrow the headline-grabbing Kuranui College side will play Carterton Red and if Kuranui show anywhere near the form which saw them demolish Wairarapa College by 21 goals last weekend they should win in a canter.
