A child who died after being hit by a car on a Canterbury rural road was a pupil at the local primary school.

Police confirmed the child’s death following a serious crash on Leeston Rd, Springston, yesterday afternoon.

Today, Springston School, which teaches year 1-8 students, confirmed that the child was one of its pupils.

“We have had a tragic passing of a student of our school. We are unable to provide any further details at this point as the police investigation is continuing.

“Our thoughts are with the family of the child at this point as well as staff and students who are being supported within the school,” the school board said.

Yesterday, police said the child died at the scene despite the best efforts of emergency services.

The road was closed between Goulds Rd and Bethels Rd while the Serious Crash Unit investigated.

Police are continuing to investigate.
