A Masterton boy suffered severe leg injuries after wrecking his parents' car while trying to evade police at the weekend.
The boy, 13, who is now in Wellington Hospital with a broken leg after being cut out of the vehicle wreckage, still faces the prospect of charges arising from his antics
early on Saturday morning.
A police patrol had spotted the red Toyota Starlet and attempted to pull it over because of the boy's erratic driving. As soon as the boy saw the patrol car, he took off.
Masterton police Senior Sergeant Warwick Burr said the patrol gave chase but quickly decided to back off because the conditions were too dangerous.
A short time later the police patrol car discovered the crash site. The hatchback had ploughed into the Oasis building after crossing the railway line where Lincoln Road meets Akura Road in the west of Masterton.
Police said the boy driver was going too fast over the tracks and lost control and smashed into a steel beam on the corner of the entrance to Oasis Trust building. A sewer pipe on the outside of the buildings was also smashed by the car.
A passerby who saw the crash said the boy crossed the railway lines on the wrong side of the road before smashing into the building.
Fire staff used the "jaws of life" to extricate the 13-year-old and he was taken to Masterton Hospital for treatment to severe injuries to his legs. Police said inquiries are continuing to decide whether any charges would be laid.
The boy is now recovering in the children's ward at Wellington Hospital with his leg plated, pinned and plastered.
Ambulance staff said he is in a stable condition and would make a full recovery.
