Bichon frise mauled to death by two bull terriers, man injured

Roger Stare lost his best mate Charlie following an attack by two bull terriers which killed the seven year old bichon frise and injured him.

Dog control officers were called to a property two weeks before a pensioner was attacked by bull terriers which then killed his bichon frise.

Roger Stare, 73, is now seeking answers after his best mate Charlie was mauled to death in the Prestons subdivision on Friday.

Mr Stare suffered multiple wounds and bruising during the unprovoked and surprise attack.

"I would like to know why this happened . . . the dogs should have never been there in the first place," he said.

The attack happened on Te Rito St about 11am, while Mr Stare was taking Charlie for his daily walk.

Two bull terriers pushed their way through an insecure window in a house and charged at them.

Charlie was attacked and killed by two bull terriers last Friday after they leaped from an unsecured window in Prestons subdivison.

A Te Rito St resident, who did not want to be named, told The Star yesterday she called dog control two weeks ago when the bull terriers escaped from the property.

Mr Stare now wants to know why the dogs were able to escape again, this time with lethal consequences.

The city council has impounded one of the bull terriers but the other dog was allowed back to its owner after being classed as a "passenger to the attack."

A city council spokeswoman was unable to provide details yesterday of the outcome of the call out two weeks ago.

Mr Stare said the dogs' owner rents the property they escaped from and he has been issued a 48-hour notice to remove the animals from the subdivision.

The Prestons subdivision covenant lists that residents shall not keep any dog which in whole or part appears to be a pit bull terrier, rottweiler, japanese akita, japanese tosa, dogo argentino or fila brasileiro on any properties.

The city council spokeswoman said the dog involved in this attack is being held in custody at the animal shelter, until this investigation has been completed.
