A volunteer army participated in a massive clean-up operation along North Shore beaches this week.

More than 900 school children and office workers spent three days removing rubbish from the Devonport and Long Bay coastline.

Sustainable Coastlines director Sam Judd said the effort was a great success, with an estimated 15,000 litres of waste collected in just three days.

"Everyone really mucked in and got a lot of rubbish," he said.

Judd said the volunteers found garbage ranging from the sinister to the silly.

"We found a couple of syringes, a really creepy baby doll and a couch in the Wairau Creek. And then we found a set of false teeth ..."

Volunteers will be counting, categorising, weighing and calculating the volume of rubbish at the Constellation Drive transfer station this week.
