A man has died nearly two weeks on after he was badly injured a pre-dawn crash on Auckland’s Southwestern Motorway.
The crash happened on December 3, with a car and truck colliding on the Māngere section of SH20. Emergency services were first alerted about 4am, a police spokesperson said.
The man was found at the scene with critical injuries and was transported to hospital by ambulance.
However, the man’s outlook had not improved despite the efforts of medical staff, and he died from his injuries overnight.
The driver of the car was extracted from the vehicle and taken to Auckland City Hospital in a critical condition.
Two northbound lanes were closed while the Serious Crash Unit conducted a scene examination, police said.
Google Maps showed gridlocked traffic in the area soon after the crash; however, NZTA reopened the lanes and off-ramp by 8.30am, in turn easing traffic.
UPDATE 7:00AM
The northbound Coronation Rd off-ramp is still closed, along with two lanes of the motorway. Traffic is heavy as far back as the link from SH1. Consider an alternative route, delay travel or expect delays. ^KF https://t.co/Qt8lkgliW9

The trapped driver was freed eight minutes after crews arrived on the scene, and 16 minutes after they got the call, Fire and Emergency shift manager Josh Pennefather told the Herald.
