Jagpreet Singh named as man who died after SH20 crash in Māngere

Police have released the name of the man who died almost two weeks after he was badly injured in a pre-dawn crash on Auckland’s Southwestern Motorway.

He was Jagpreet Singh, 20, of Auckland.

The crash happened on December 3, when a car and truck collided on the Māngere section of SH20. Emergency services were alerted about 4am, a police spokesperson said.

Singh was found at the scene with critical injuries and was taken to hospital by ambulance.

However, his outlook had not improved despite the efforts of medical staff and he died from his injuries.

The police spokesperson said inquiries into the circumstances of the crash were continuing.

After the crash, lanes and an off-ramp on the Southwestern Motorway were closed for hours as emergency services worked the site.

The crash happened on northbound lanes near the Coronation Rd off-ramp. The injured driver was extracted from the vehicle and taken to Auckland City Hospital in a critical condition.

The trapped driver was freed eight minutes after crews arrived on the scene, and 16 minutes after they got the call, Fire and Emergency shift manager Josh Pennefather told the Herald.

Google Maps showed gridlocked traffic in the area soon after the crash; however, NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi had reopened the lanes and off-ramp by 8.30am.
