Firefighters battle blaze in basement of six-storey Dilworth Building in downtown Auckland

Firefighters battled a blaze in the basement of a heritage-listed six-level building in Auckland’s CBD this morning.

A Fire and Emergency shift manager said they were called at around 10.15am after reports that a fire had broken out.

The footpath surrounding the Dilworth Building, at the bottom of Queen St, was cordoned off while firefighters worked to put out the blaze.

The building is used for both residential and commercial purposes.

Crews from five engines and four support vehicles on Customs St East were working to extinguish the blaze and ventilate the building.

Traffic had started to build on Customs St East and West as emergency services vehicles were blocking the road outside the building.

Motorists were unable to head west on Customs St, while traffic heading east had been taken down to one lane.

Queen St was also starting to back up with shoppers heading to the CBD as Christmas fast approaches.

Fire and emergency has confirmed emergency services have now left the area with all roads and footpaths open again.
