Catamaran breaks free of mooring, runs on to rocks lining Waitematā Harbour causeway

A catamaran in Auckland’s Waitematā Harbour has been left damaged but salvageable after it broke free from its mooring and washed up on to a rocky seawall lining.

A witness travelling along the Tāmaki Drive causeway around 8.30am told the Herald they spotted the catamaran lodged aside the rocks opposite the Outdoor Boating Club with large holes puncturing its side.

Footage showed one man in a hi-vis jacket fastening ropes on the stranded vessel as two others stood on the adjacent rocks.

Police said they were notified of a catamaran that had come loose from its mooring at 5.14am and passed on relevant information to the Auckland Harbourmaster.

The Harbourmaster’s Office said it was aware of the vessel going adrift and grounding itself on rocks near Tāmaki Drive.

“The owner of the vessel is arranging for it to be refloated,” it said.

“Our team has visited the site to check that the owner has the matter under control, but we are not actively involved in the salvage operation.”
