Police said they were called at 6.05am to the three-vehicle crash.
There were no injuries.
Two lanes were blocked however expected to be open shortly as police worked to clear the scene, a police spokesperson said.
A passing bus passenger told the Herald one of the vehicles was flipped over on its side and lying across a lane. Two other cars were in the bus lane.
There were multiple police cars and fire trucks in attendance.
Traffic is crawling past the scene with all motorway lanes backed up to Albany.
NZTA advised motorists to pass with care and expect delays.
