A Napier high school student has been seriously injured and one of their fellow students is in police custody after a serious assault near their school.
A police spokesman said emergency services were called to Morris Spence Ave, Onekawa about 8.20am on Monday.
Police cars and a Hato Hone StJohn rapid response vehicle were seen on school grounds at William Colenso College shortly afterward.
William Colenso College principal Jocelyn Auld said on social media a serious incident had taken place outside the shop on Morris Spence Ave before school.
“This incident resulted in the school calling an ambulance to transport one student to hospital, and one student was escorted to the police station.
“Whānau [of] students involved have been notified and are supporting their students.
“All students are safe and the situation is being followed up by the appropriate authorities.
“The safety and wellbeing of our students and staff is our immediate priority. While we cannot provide any further details about the ongoing investigation, my door is always open for anyone who has concerns or needs support. The school is open and will continue as normal.”
A St John spokesperson said the service was notified of an “assault incident” and one person was transported to Hawke’s Bay Hospital in a serious condition.
The Ministry of Education referred an inquiry for comment to police.
A police spokesman said inquiries into the circumstances of the incident were ongoing on Monday.
