A leading security alarm company has been fined more than $10,000 for putting misleading advertisements in the Yellow Pages.
Christchurch District Court Judge Edward Ryan said the fines against Signature Security Systems for advertising an alarm at one quarter of the true cost ought to send a message that advertising hadto be fair and honest.
Commerce Commission prosecutor Paul Kellar said Signature Security, which has 30 per cent of the New Zealand market, advertised "fully monitored alarms installed from just $295 plus GST," with an asterisk linking to the term "conditions apply" in much smaller type. The reality was that the alarm systems were leased rather than bought.
