A 4.1 magnitude aftershock struck near Darfield, Canterbury this morning, GNS Science reported.
The quake hit 30km south-east of Darfield at a depth of 10km at 10.47am.
GNS Science said the tremor was felt in the Canterbury region, with some residents sharing their experience online on Twitter.
"Quite rumbly and noisy out here in Rolleston. That one seemed to go on quite a while," 7point1squared wrote.
"[I] was in a training session when the latest #eqnz wobble went through. A slight shudder, no more. Some didn't even notice it," Startled Ninja said.
