24-year-old man critical after hit by car on Waikato highway

Emergency services are at a section of State Highway 27, near Ngarua.

A 24-year-old man hit by a car near Ngarua last night is in a critical condition in Waitkato Hospital's intensive care unit.

Police say they are unable to release a name at this stage while under Serious Crash Unit investigation.

The man was struck near the intersection of State Highway 27 and Ngarua Rd at 6.45pm.

Police said last night they were speaking with the driver involved and witnesses to establish exactly what happened.

As a result of the incident, the road was initially closed between Maungakawa and Diagonal Rds.

In a statement around 11pm last night, police said State Highway 27 near Ngarua has since reopened following the crash.
