10 places to rent in New Zealand for $400 - $450

The average household income for New Zealand is now $64,000, with housing costs makes up a large portion of expenditure.

Based on this total, and not taking into consideration any taxes and/or gains, such as Working For Families tax credits, the average weekly income is $1230.77. Many recommend that rent or mortgage payments should be around a third of the total income - in this case $410.25.

We took to Trade Me to discover what properties are available for rent around New Zealand for between $400-450.

1. Whangarei: 4 bedroom house with two bathrooms

A dreamy weatherboard home features open plan living, a modern kitchen, sweeping staircase and - sea views. It is an easy walk to the beach and is on an easy care section.

2. Epsom, Auckland: 1 bedroom unit with one bathroom

Situated on Mountain Road, this unit is in zone for popular Auckland Boys Grammar and Epsom Girls Grammar. It features an open plan living area and French doors that open out onto a private deck.

3. Manurewa, Auckland: 4 bedroom house with two bathrooms

This brick house shares a section with another property and has three 'good' sized bedrooms, the master with an ensuite and a single bedroom. A ranchslider opens out onto a paved courtyard.

4. St Andrews, Hamilton: 3 bedroom townhouse with two bathrooms

This is a tidy property with neutral décor and a double garage. It features an open plan kitchen, lounge and dining area and has a small lawn.

5. New Plymouth: 2 bedroom apartment with one bathroom

Within walking distance to the CBD, this is a small apartment and includes a single garage. It has a small kitchen, dining area and tiny bathroom.

6. Newlands, Wellington: 3 bedroom house with one bathroom

Most places near the city at this price range are 1-2 bedrooms, but further out there are bigger houses available. This house is in a bush setting, is well insulated and has a woodburner. Although small, it has stunning bush and water views

7. Atawhai, Nelson: 3 bedroom house with two bathrooms

This is a retro, 1960s style home with sea views. It features a large lounge, and good-sized bedrooms, storage, a large garden - and a fully fenced swimming pool.

8. Burnside, Christchurch: 2 bedroom unit with one bathroom

This is a tidy, private unit with neutral décor and has a small lawn. Situated down a driveway, it is in zone for Burnside High School.

9. Port Chalmers, Dunedin: 4 bedroom house with two bathrooms

This is a tastefully decorated, stunning 1910 villa. Mixing modern living with historical features, it is situated on a large site.

10. Invercargill: 5 bedrooms with two bathrooms

There were literally no houses available in Southland for between $400 and $450 and there were three houses for over $450. For ten dollars more than the allocated limit, this house features five bedrooms, four offices, spa bath, spa pool and two heat pumps.
