A Wellington softball player who died in what police say was a murder-suicide in the city nine days ago tried to arrange a playing stint in the United States the week before to escape the anguish of a relationship breakup.
Lee Gillard, 23, contacted the manager of Pueblo Colorado Bandits, for whom he played in 1996, to see if he could return.
He and estranged partner Chanel Renee Lambert, 21, were found dead in her Johnsonville flat on June 24. Police say he killed her and then himself.
