A trust has been set up in honour of Paihia cervical cancer victim Colleen Poutsma, to help others dying from cancer.
Mrs Poutsma died on April 11 following a high-profile battle with cervical cancer after disgraced Whangarei surgeon Graham Parry failed to diagnose the disease.
Today the Colleen Poutsma Life Education Trust was launched in the Far North District Council (FNDC) chambers in Kaikohe to provide practical help to enhance quality of life for other cancer patients.
The trust, which has been set up by the Poutsma family and the FNDC, is designed to commemorate Mrs Poutsma's life.
It has been set up to raise and disburse funds to enhance the quality of life of cancer patients who are in palliative care around New Zealand.
The trust will work with hospices and other health providers on a palliative care strategy, using its funds to support cancer patients in a home-care situation.
It will also fund training for health professionals and volunteers in home palliative care techniques and provide funds for pain relief solutions for people with terminal cancer.
