The word most Kiwis searched for in Google is not one that instantly comes to mind.

Agario took out the top trending search this year and in case you have never heard of it it is an online game.

Created by a Brazilian developer called Matheus Valadares, gamers play as a cell gobbling up food to get bigger. The challenge is to eat other players who are smaller, while trying not to get eaten by players larger than yourself.

The game is billed as being fun and addictive for such a simple premise, however it still qualifies as a mystery for number one search.

Elsewhere Cyclone Pam, how to make pancakes, what is Isis, who is the Bachelor NZ and where is Gallipoli were among the most searched, or trending items on Google in 2015.

Each year the search engine giant reflects on the moments that made us laugh, cry, and search, as part of its Year in Search.

This was a year in which we celebrated a rugby win and lost a rugby hero in quick succession, and were captivated by news stories from the tragic Nepal earthquake to the new royal baby.

It was a huge year for rugby, but the Cricket World Cup pipped the Rugby World Cup in terms of top trending searches for the year. The untimely passing of two of our most beloved rugby heroes, Jonah Lomu and Jerry Collins, topped the trending Kiwis, and the Red Peak Flag was the most searched for off all the flag designs, despite it failing to carry the referendum this month.

"How to" searches are always particularly representative of the trends sweeping a country, and this year, Kiwis were asking how to write a CV, how to lose weight, how to draw, and how to tie a tie.

We're a curious bunch, and this year we were just as much into the big tough topics (Isis and the TPPA) as the metaphysical (love, the meaning of life), and the grammatical (what is a noun, what is a verb).

Here are New Zealand's top trending searches of 2015:
