When picking a suitable ensemble for the VMAs one can push the fashion boundaries, shoving them so far that it's shocking - that's what we love about the red carpet at music events. It's this creativity we crave and consider when collating our galleries of must-see looks from the red carpet. Check out our galleries and share your thoughts and favourites in the comment section below.

Best in Black
There's always bound to be black on any red carpet. This year's VMAs served up a smattering of the flattering colour, with lots of leather. Herewith our handpicked favourites:

Lorde. She might not like to grace the red carpet, but she shared her VMA look with fans on Twitter. All black with a classic plum Lorde lip of course. Photo / Twitter.com/lordemusic

Solange has gone for mostly black, with a hint of navy and red lashes. Photo / Getty Images
Ireland Baldwin has picked a very cool, black studded VMA debut dress, standing alongside her girlfriend Angel Haze, nominated for Best Video with a Social Message. Photo / Getty Images

Dare to Bare
There's nothing like flashing a little (or a lot) of flesh to get tongues wagging. These racy numbers deserve a mention:

Taylor Swift surprised us all when she stepped out in this sexy hot pants jumpsuit. Photo / Getty Images
J-Lo has long been a fan of showing off her gorgeous body. Today, she doesn't disappoint. Photo / Getty Images

Red Carpet Winners
Katy paying homage to Britney's double denim, a bright yellow suit sans shirt and some gorgeous looking ladies, these are our picks of the most memorable looks from this year's VMAs red carpet:

Katy Perry and Riff Raff for their throwback to the Britney and Justin double denim moment at the VMAs. Photos / Getty Images
Gwen Stefani. We'll always have a soft spot for this spunky 90s punk chick. We're loving her hot pink L.A.M.B ensemble. Photo / Getty Images
Taylor Swift has the pins to pull off the shortest of shorts. This was a very pleasant surprise from the wholesome country starlet. Photo / Getty Images
Jeremy Scott, because you have to see the yellow coat and tails this fashion designer is sporting. With smiley face on the back and no shirt under the blazer. Photos / Getty Images
Nicky Minaj has toned it down a notch this year, looking smashing in this gold leopard print minidress. Photo / Getty Images
Kendall Jenner is always nailing on the red carpet for us. Photo / Getty Images
