The sound of director Michael Mann's films are distinctive - his use of electronic and/or percussive music possibly dating back to his days helming the cop show Miami Vice.
Much of the soundtrack for his epic of tobacco corporation and media shenanigans is the work of Lisa Gerard (theformer voice of ethereal soundscapers Dead Can Dance) and Pieter Bourke, the pair mixing ethno-percussion chant-a-longs with languid, ambient tracks such as the This Mortal Coil-like Sacrifice.
With help from Gustavo Satolalla (the gypsy trance of Iguazu), saxophonist Jan Garbarek (the glacial Rites) and Massive Attack (a remix of their classic Safe From Harm), this is a classy collection of head-down listening. Or just the thing to have on when the nicotine patch is kicking in ...
