In a deal with prosecutors who dropped a hate crime charge, Veronica's Closet actor Wallace Langham pleaded no contest to battery after an attack on a gay man.
Langham, who plays a closet homosexual on the TV show, was sentenced by a Los Angeles judge to three years' probation.
He was also
ordered to serve 450 hours of community service, donate $US10,000 ($20,400) to the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Centre, pay victim John Luciano's medical bills, and stay at least 100m away from Luciano.
Langham, 34, assaulted Luciano at a gourmet market last September, shouting anti-gay slurs.
"It's something that arose out of a heated argument," the actor said outside court. "I shouted the most hateful things I could think of."
