Just over 110 New Zealand wines have been declared outstanding gold medal winners by an international panel of judges at this year's Air New Zealand Wine Awards.

This year 1,379 different drops from around the country were entered in 16 different classes of wine. Of the 655 medals given out, 111 were gold. The strongest performer was Pinot Noir, bagging 22 awards. Sauvignon Blanc took out 20 and Chardonnay earned 17.

Last year only 97 wines were awarded gold. Chief judge Michael Brajkovich said this year's entries were the best yet.

"The wines in this competition seem to improve year on year, and this year there were some truly outstanding entries. It's a good reflection of the evolution of the New Zealand wine sector," he said.

New Zealand's largest wine-producing region, Marlborough, led the way in the medal tally - its wines won 55 gold, 109 silver and 180 bronze.

Hawkes Bay also had a good show, taking home a total of 117 medals - 22 gold, 39 silver and 56 bronze.

The elite gold medal and trophy winners will be announced at an awards dinner on the 23rd of November in Queenstown.
