From the birth of the future King to the announcement of a trip to our shores, we take a look back at the royal stories that you loved this year.

The world welcomes the Prince of Cambridge

Cheering crowds rushed towards the gates of Buckingham Palace as it was announced early on July 23 (New Zealand time) that the Duchess of Cambridge had given birth to a healthy male heir weighing 8lbs 6oz. Prince George is third in line to the throne and in the direct line of succession after Queen Elizabeth II's eldest son and heir Prince Charles, and then his eldest son William. "We could not be happier," William, the son of Charles and the late Princess Diana, said in a brief statement.

Royal baby gets a name

Britain's Prince William and his wife Kate named their baby boy George Alexander Louis, sticking firmly to royal tradition with a first name used by six previous monarchs.
George was the bookmakers' clear favourite for the third-in-line to the throne as it pays apparent tribute to Queen Elizabeth II's father King George VI, the infant's great-great-grandfather, who died in 1952.

Prince William and his wife Catherine have released the first official photographs of their baby son George - and in a break with tradition they were taken by her father Michael Middleton. The intimate photographs were shot earlier this month in the garden of the Middletons' family home in rural Bucklebury, west of London, and show the newborn prince lying peacefully in his mother's arms.

Prince William's wife Kate attended her first public event five weeks after giving birth. But there was no sign of Prince George himself - now third in line to the British throne - as the couple attended a sports event on the Welsh island of Anglesey, where William is based as a Royal Air Force search-and-rescue helicopter pilot. Wearing black jeans and a grey-green jacket with her long brown hair loose, Kate was described as looking "absolutely gorgeous" by locals who had come to watch the start of the gruelling three-day Ring O' Fire race around Anglesey's rugged coast.

William and Kate confirm NZ tour

Kensington Palace has confirmed that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will tour New Zealand and Australia in April next year, most likely accompanied by Prince George. The visit, rumoured for several months, will be the first New Zealand and Australian tour for Kate Middleton. It's expected the couple will bring their son, Prince George, Royal Central reported. He will be nine months old and it will be the first time he has left England.
