"Considering wearing white pants is a bit outside the comfort zone of most Kiwi blokes, interest has been huge," event organiser Vinny Sherry said. "The thought of dressing up and bringing your own stuff sounds challenging but people tend to get really swept up in it as they go along."
Diner en Blanc began in Paris in 1988 and has been adopted by more than 40 cities around the world. The idea is for guests to take over a public space for a well-orchestrated picnic with live music and dancing.
On Saturday, groups of guests will gather at rallying points across Auckland. They will then travel to the picnic location by bus, train, ferry and foot.
Tickets start at $101.70 a couple including transport. Those not taking their own food can pick up pre-ordered hampers at $95-$118 for three courses for two and pre-purchased wine and champagne can be collected at the venue.
To attend, register online at auckland.dinerenblanc.info.
