The Cannes Film Festival is one of the most hotly-anticipated events on Hollywood's social calendar, made even more exciting this year by its milestone 70th anniversary.

The sophistication of Cannes tends to invoke more risqué, avant garde choices than generally seen on American red carpets, setting the stage for some incredible couture and some almighty fashion fails.

While this year's carpet was largely owned by the supermodel set, including Bella Hadid and Emily Ratajkowski, it also featured some of our favourite Hollywood stalwarts and fresh fashion faces to watch.

Here are the best and worst looks so far on the Cannes Film Festival 2017 red carpet.

THE BEST

Bella Hadid

A less daring look than last year, the supermodel still commanded attention in this stunning, soft pink Alexandre Gauthie gown, which skimmed her slender figure from head to toe.

Emily Ratajkowski

Emily Ratajkowski arrived in a glossy nude gown by Twinset, in a shade to match her model mate Bella's.

The simple but sexy choice was given a classy twist with a slick up 'do and choppy fringe.

Jessica Chastain

Jessica Chastain contrasted her fiery locks with a black embroidered Alexander McQueen gown. Channelling old-Hollywood glamour, the strapless frock featured a velvet bodice embroidered with delicate flowers and doves.

Elle Fanning

Fanning stole the show in this regal cream gown by Vivienne Westwood. Reminiscent of Angelina Jolie's wedding dress, the stiff, strapless neckline, figure-hugging corset and embroidery on the train made for a mature yet playful choice.

Uma Thurman

Cementing her status as an ageless beauty, Uma Thurman was pretty in pink in this statuesque Versace gown.

Sara Sampaio

Victoria's Secret model Sara Sampaio stood out from the wash of soft shades - and tied in with the carpet - when she arrived in this dramatic Spanish-inspired gown by Zuhair Murad.

Eva Herzigova dazzled in this shimmering metallic number with just the right balance of glamour and sex appeal.

Winnie Harlow

Another star to buck the beige trend, Winnie Harlow's sapphire blue dress was definitely a show stopper.

Lily-Rose Depp

"So Frenchy, so chic", Lily-Rose is perfection in this Chanel Resort gown. Managing to avoid the "if you've got it flaunt it" trap many of her young cohorts fall into, Depp's carpet career is off to a promising start.

Naomie Harris

A fun choice for Cannes, Naomie Harris brought the rainbow with this quirky neon tulle gown by Gucci.

THE WORST

Frederique Bel

What happens when you combine elements of an ice skater's costume with traditional cowgirl garb? This disaster.

Hailey Baldwin

While Baldwin gets points for adding some colour to the star-studded parade, the cut wasn't quite right and the fabric looked cheap under the lights. The peplum waist swallow her petite frame and the fabric wrinkled and pulled at the back.

Marion Cotillard

This black Jean Paul Gaultier Couture number just isn't working for Cotillard. She would have been better to stick to the old-Hollywood glamour look that has proved flawless on her in the past.

Susan Sarandon

Yes, she's a style icon. Yes, she could teach her younger counterparts a thing or two about red carpet style. But this time we reckon Susan has missed the mark: The heavy velvet looks dated and seemed ill fitting under the lights.

Hofit Golan

Hofit Golan certainly drew attention for all the wrong reasons in this backless jumpsuit.

Perhaps a better fit on a music awards carpet, the white one-piece featured a ruched bodice complete with side boob, and totally missed the mark.

Kristen Stewart

We're not quite sure where the rest of K-Stew's Chanel dress has gone, but it's clear that she's definitely not afraid to rock that edgy style she is so fond of. It's good to see that she's stuck to the dress code and finally swapped her trainers for a pair of heels though.

Kendall Jenner

Is Kendall wearing a bed sheet on the red carpet? Nope, it's actually a Giambattista Valli Couture dress. It literally looks like she's grabbed the sheet as she's jumped out of bed and tied it at the waist to protect her modesty.
