Sir Howard Morrison's body has been brought back to his Rotorua marae after a highly emotional welcome.
Hundreds gathered at Te Papaiouru marae for the arrival of Sir Howard, who passed away yesterday morning in his sleep.
In appalling weather, which ended when Sir Howard's coffin arrived at the marae
entrance, people broke into chants and haka to welcome the singer's body.
Many were in tears as his casket was carried on to the marae.
Sir Howard's body lay at his home last night for his family to pay their private respects. He is survived by Rangiwhata Ann Manahi, known as Kuia, his wife of 52 years, and a daughter and two sons Donna, Richard and Howard Jr.
His nephew Temuera Morrison said it was an intimate evening full of singing and laughter.
Sir Howard's body was taken to the family homestead in Ohinemutu this morning before he was led on to the marae by a small group of warriors.
His family followed closely behind as a burst of extremely heavy rain fell.
"We think it's a sign, it's pretty dramatic and quite a fitting send off for our rangatira," said one woman, who is helping to cater for the multitudes expected today.
Among those attending the powhiri were Maori Party co-leader Tariana Turia, MP Hone Harawira, Georgina Te Heuheu.
Hundreds more people are expected at Ohinemutu today including Sir Michael Fay and a group from Tuhoe where Sir Howard spent his early years.
Minister of Maori Affairs, Dr Pita Sharples, is understood to have organised the army to help with catering for the event.
Sir Howard will lie in state in the Tamatekapua meeting house until Tuesday. He will be buried at Kauae cemetery near Ngongotaha.
