A prominent Maori academic wants a cap on the number of white people migrating to New Zealand.

Auckland University's Margaret Mutu says they pose a threat to race relations.

Her comments appear in this morning's Sunday Star Times.

She says the number of people coming from South Africa, England and the United States should be restricted, as they bring attitudes destructive to Maori.

She says they bring an attitude of white supremacy.

The remarks follow a leaked Labour Department report, which found Maori are more likely to be against immigration than any other ethnic group.

Ms Mutu said Maori are generally supportive of immigration from Asian countries.
