A wine-tasting on site at the award-winning Ohau Wines vineyard, in their fabulously retro upstairs lounge, with a wine maestro full of knowledge, history and anecdotes about the vineyard, viticulture and wines.

Where is it located?
6 Bishop's Road, Ohau. Just east of State Highway 1.
Who is it suitable for?
Anyone 18 years or over who is interested in learning about and tasting the wine varieties produced here. You certainly don't have to be a wine snob, in fact we were told that there was no such thing as a "stupid" question!
The tasting experiences are suitable for groups, clubs, community organisations up to a maximum of 30 people at a time.
Do I have to book in advance?
Yes, for the organised group tasting experiences. However, visitors can call in and sample a couple of wines at the cellar door too.
What do you need to take?
Your tastebuds, an open mind about which wines you 'usually' prefer, and your own nibbles or platters to go with the tasting if you wish. While the winery doesn't offer any catering or food to purchase, it does have kitchen facilities you can use.
How much does it cost?
It's $15 per person, which includes tasting about seven or eight wines, and a bottle to take home with you too.
Highlights of the visit?
As well as trying the wines on offer - every single one of which is an award-winner at various national and international wine shows except the vintages too new to have been entered yet - it was fascinating to hear about the history of the vines.
The vineyard was established in Ohau at that site because it is an old riverbed with stony soil, rather than being the rich horticultural land that characterises much of the Horowhenua.
Their very first vintage, the Ohau Gravels Pinot Gris 2009, blew wine judges away, surprised the rest of the wine industry and set Ohau Wines on the path to become one of the country's top level wine producers.
Stand-out favourites for us among the tasting options on offer included the triple award-winning Woven Stone Pinot Gris, and the summery rosé made with a blend of Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir.
Another highlight was the cellar door pricing for those interested in buying a bottle or two.
Decent discounts meant the prices were as accessible as the supermarket in some cases. The rosé, for example, was just $11 a bottle.
Things to remember?
While the tastings aren't huge, there are a few of them, so it's a good idea to have a designated driver.
