THE CONTENDER
With Survivor and The Apprentice under his belt, reality TV supremo Mark Burnett turned to boxing - at the prompting of Sylvester Stallone.
The first season of The Contender, while critically praised, got a rough ride from NBC and was dropped after the first season. ESPN stepped in to pick it up and the second season, on now, was a ratings winner for the sports channel.
Stallone was too busy filming another unnecessary Rocky instalment, Rocky Balboa, to appear in this series so we miss his unintentionally funny double-act with former champion boxer Sugar Ray Leonard. As mentors to the young boxers competing for the cash prize, the two developed a fine line in pseudo-motivational philosophy that delivered a 1-2 combination to the funnybone. In this series, the physical challenges have been dispensed with and we get more focus on the 16 boxers' backgrounds.
