The Rock grossed out fans by sharing a video of a gruesome hand injury sustained on the set of his new movie - but the film studio says it was just a prank.

On an Instagram post captioned, "I ain't got time to bleed," Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson laughs to the camera about an accident that has made his ring finger twisted out of shape.

"I just stepped off set ... we had a little accident," The Rock says while smiling.

The camera then pans down to show a horribly mangled finger - an image that is not for the faint of heart.

"Bleed? Ha ha - I ain't got time to bleed. Alright let's pop this son'bitch back in," he says.

But Variety reports The Rock's mangled finger was a prosthetic hand, used as a prop on the set of the film.

Perhaps he should have a word with Jimmy Fallon, who isn't laughing after spending 10 days in hospital over an accident that saw him nearly sever a finger.

Central Intelligence is an action comedy co-starring Kevin Hart, Ed Helms and Amy Ryan, and has a 2016 release date.
