In 1906, a man in The Tombs, or more formally known as the Manhattan Detention Complex, supposedly died of fright. "Antonio Spinelli, 29 years old, awaiting trial in the Tombs for the murder of a fellow countryman, died last night. The keepers declare the manwas frightened to death. They say that some friends called to see Spinelli last week just after another Italian had been sentenced to die in the electric chair. They told Spinelli about it. He became badly scared, could think and talk of nothing else, and began to fail. Last night the keepers found him unconscious in his cell. He died in half an hour."
"My boss made us play a game to keep morale up: There were several rules like calling each other certain nicknames or you could challenge someone to rock, paper, scissors. If you break a rule or lose in rock, paper, scissors, you needed to do 10 pushups. It was all in good fun, or so I thought. One afternoon, I didn't feel like doing pushups, and my colleagues were kind of teasing me about it, but again all in good fun. Turns out, my boss didn't like my refusal at all and fired me the next day. This was as a work and traveller in NZ, so not too horrible, although it still bugs me that I got fired because I refused to play a silly game lol."
