Sam Smith says he was 'naive' about Bond song

Singer Sam Smith admitted he was "very naive" in assuming the public would love his Spectre theme song Writing's On The Wall.

The singer, 23, said that he felt very confident about the 007 track before it was released but quickly realised he could not please everyone.

"I was feeling really confident about it - and I still feel confident about it - but when I released it, I was very naive and I thought everyone would love it. But Bond, it's impossible for everyone to like a Bond song," he told BBC Radio 1.

Smith made history with the first Bond theme song to reach No.1 in the charts, but the song was released to mixed reviews.

"The fan base, they're mental, so that initial release with the mixed response, I was like, OK, just finding my feet. But when it went to No.1, it was just unbelievable, it was amazing," he added.

The song crowned a successful year for Smith, who won four Grammy Awards in February, including the coveted Song of the Year and Record of the Year just nine months after the release of his debut album In The Lonely Hour.

Smith has been working on his second album and rebuffed suggestions it has been difficult, revealing he has already penned four songs and has a title.

"I genuinely thought this was going to be the hardest album - it still could be - but I refuse to think like that because this is what I do and what I love to do.

"I write love songs and I'm forever going in and out of relationships and wanting to say things about life and love, and if I had nothing to say over the last year then that's mental because so much has happened to me," he said.
