MANCHESTER - England has fought back on the second day of the second test against Pakistan at Old Trafford.
After Inzamam-ul-Haq's hulking century on day one, the English duo of Graham Thorpe and Michael Vaughan brought England back into the match before rain cut short the second day's play.
The pair, who came together with their side ailing at 15 for 2, added an unbroken 189 for the third wicket.
Thorpe made 98 not out and Vaughan 84 not out as England reached 204 for two in reply to Pakistan's first innings of 403.
The home side, trailing Pakistan by 199 runs, are by no means out of the woods, but the follow-on - the most likely route to defeat - was avoided.
Pakistan resumed their first innings on 370 for eight, adding 10 before Rashid Latif was run out for a test-best 71, including 10 fours.
Darren Gough ended the innings by trapping Waqar leg-before for five. Caddick, Gough and fellow pace bowler Matthew Hoggard all took three wickets.
Pakistan need to win to square the two-match series.
