Chris Hemsworth has won Hollywood's beefcake battle.

The former Home & Away star turned Marvel superhero Thor claimed the People's Choice Award on Wednesday for favourite action star, beating the muscle-laden Dwayne Johnson, Vin Diesel, Chris Pratt and Robert Downey Jr.

"It's a pretty special thing being able to go to work each day and not feel like work and instead feel like a childhood dream," Hemsworth told the audience at Los Angeles' Microsoft Theatre.

The ceremony, voted on by fans, was not such a good outing for fellow Australian Rebel Wilson, who was trumped by Melissa McCarthy for favourite comedic movie actress.

Australian country music star Keith Urban also missed out, with Blake Shelton winning the favourite male country artist.

Ellen DeGeneres, who won favourite daytime TV host, was also named Humanitarian of the Year for her charity work that has raised more than $US50 million.

"I have to say it's a little strange to receive an award for being nice and generous," DeGeneres said.

"That's what we are supposed to do."

The comedienne joked with the crowd, telling them she would show off her generosity. She then shared a photo of a shirtless Hemsworth.

Action man Vin Diesel paid an emotional tribute to his late co-star Paul Walker.

The actor and producer remembered Walker as he accepted two awards for the movie Furious 7.

On a funny note, host and Glee actress Jane Lynch poked fun at the recent Miss Universe gaffe by giving an award to the wrong person.

The Miss Universe pageant held in December last year was thrown into controversy when host Steve Harvey crowned first runner-up Miss Colombia instead of real winner Miss Philippines.

During Wednesday's ceremony, Lynch presented a fake award to The Odd Couple actor Tom Lennon only to take it back and present it to the real Miss Colombia as part of a tongue-in-cheek stunt.

Other winners on the night, which officially kicked of Hollywood's awards season, were: Sandra Bullock (movie actress); Johnny Depp (dramatic movie actor); Dakota Johnson (dramatic actress); Supergirl (TV drama); singer Shawn Mendes (breakout artist).
