The fourth instalment of the Pirates of the Caribbean series has had the biggest opening weekend at New Zealand cinemas for 2011. It's $1.48 million local bow is in line with its big openings all around the world - including US$90 million ($113 million) in the United States and a further US$256.3 million from other countries.
Though compared to its predecessors' US openings - At World's End drew US$114.7 million in May 2007 and Dead Man's Chest raked in a then-record US$135.6 million in 2006 - the new instalment lagged behind. That's led to speculation that being the first 3D in the series hasn't helped revive any lasting franchise fatigue from the original trilogy.
