David McCracken's diminish and ascend is the focal point at Bondi.
Auckland sculptor David McCracken has won the inaugural $7000 Wallace Arts Trust NZ Sculpture Award, created to support an New Zealand artist exhibiting in the Sculpture By The Sea coastal walk in Bondi, Sydney, which opened on Thursday.
The award helped with transport costs for McCracken and his work, diminishand ascend, a set of steps soaring from the Bondi shoreline.
Sculpture By The Sea, which spans 2km of the Bondi to Tamarama walk, is the world's largest temporary sculpture show and this year features more than 100 works from artists throughout the world. The Wallace Arts Trust panel, which included Sir James Wallace, founded the award to encourage New Zealand sculptors to participate in the event, which is regarded as a big career booster.
Other New Zealand artists showing works are Chris Bailey, Elaine Barry Conway, Gill Gatfield, Bev Goodwin, Mia Hamilton, Veronica Herber, Carolyn Lawrence, and husband-and-wife team Jonathan Organ and Jessica Pearless. Sculpture By The Sea runs until November 10.
