Jon Hamm says playing alcoholic, womaniser Don Draper on the hit TV series Mad Men took a toll on him.
The actor also says he went through a grieving process after the show finished its seven-year run.
The actor's publicist has confirmed Hamm recently "completed treatment for his struggle with alcohol addiction".
"It takes an emotional toll especially when you are playing someone with a lot of emotions," Hamm, 44, told reporters in Beverly Hills.
The role of chauvinistic, 1960s ad man Draper catapulted Hamm from a struggling actor into one of Hollywood's A-List leading men.
He won a Golden Globe and scored seven Emmy Award nominations.
"No, it doesn't necessarily rub off on you," Hamm, talking about playing Draper, said.
"It does take its toll."
Hamm and his cast wrapped Mad Men last July, but New Zealand and US audiences will soon see the second half of the final season.
It debuts on Sky TV's Soho channel from April 7.
