But, in an interview with the NZ Herald today, the 47-year-old actress said she didn't mean she'd be returning to the title role.
"I didn't say I wanted to be (Xena again) - I said, 'They should reinvigorate it'. I wouldn't do a series because it's just too physically hard," Lawless said.
"As for an action series, I didn't like it the first time. I just did it because I had to," she joked.
Lawless believed Xena's "charmingly rabid fan base" had spun her comments into something she hadn't meant. But she thought it could be fun to do a spin-off show about the character following her time as a warrior princess.
"You could do a spoof comedy... where you see Xena 30 years later, she can't get the corset done up. It could be a comedy adventure."
Lawless later dispelled the Xena reboot rumours, writing to her Twitter followers: "Sorry, friends! news of a #Xena reboot is just a rumour. I'd love it to happen one day but it's still in the wishful thinking stage."
As Xena fans will point out, that could be difficult considering - spoiler alert - she dies at the end of season six.
And Lawless would struggle to fit filming commitments into her schedule, which has seen her appear in high-profile shows Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Parks and Recreation and Salem, as well as the upcoming horror-comedy Ash vs. Evil Dead, which is being filmed in Auckland now.
