Hamish and Andy: The deadly stunts they almost attempted

Hamish and Andy are no strangers to dangerous stunts: they've gone sewer diving, rafted down the Amazon, eaten giant worms and worn hats with live fireworks on them.

But Andy Lee has revealed the two stunts he and Hamish backed out of at the last second, fearing if they attempted them they could quite easily have been killed.

Speaking to Triple M's Hot Breakfast this week, Andy recalled pulling the pin on a stunt in Mexico after discovering several people had recently died while attempting it.

"These guys were building these poles which go about 30 metres in the air," Andy told the radio show. "They would wrap a rope around them. They'd shimmy themselves to the top of the pole, tie their legs off and then just fall back.

"The rope just naturally unwinds them all the way down, and then the tribe would stop them even though they're going at a rate of knots," he said. "When they'd get to about head height off the ground, the tribe would try and slow them down as a team and stop them."

It wasn't until Hamish and Andy rocked up to record the stunt they realised how dangerous it was.

"There had been seven deaths that year which we didn't realise once we had got there," Andy said. "We were like, 'All right, we might not do this one'."

The duo have travelled the world together for their TV series Gap Year, and they'll be back on Channel 9 later this year with a new show called Hamish and Andy's "Perfect" Holiday.

Hamish and Andy now record their most dangerous stunts on the last day of filming, a tactic they came up with after they were forced to pull out of a rodeo stunt a few years ago.

"We were meant to be in a rodeo on these bulls at the top of Australia," Andy told Triple M.

"There was an indigenous guy that jumps on the bull before us … He goes out and gets bucked off pretty early, but his hand gets caught in the reigns and his whole body did a windmill while his arm was stuck.

"It unscrewed his arm," Andy said.

"They tried to calm the bull down and got him off. They were like, 'You're up next, Andy'.

"It was day one of the trip. I said to the guys, 'If that happens to me, we're not going to be able to deliver a show'. I guarantee if that was the last day, it probably would have been a different conversation."

There's one stunt in particular Hamish and Andy did go through with that still haunts them both.

While filming Gap Year South America, Hamish agreed to be bitten by bullet ants, one of the most excruciatingly painful things a human can experience.

Hamish had to be hospitalised for eight hours after collapsing from exhaustion.
