Five upcoming games to get excited about

Sunset Overdrive

A hyper-real blast of cartoon violence, Sunset Overdrive promises to provide Ratchet & Clank-style thrills for an adult audience. Gamers take charge of the parkour-loving John, an everyman tasked with cleaning up the city of Sunset from zombie-like humans who've overdosed on energy drinks. The inventive weapony - teddy bear bombs, anyone? - look worthy of the entry price alone.

LittleBigPlanet 3
Platforms: PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4
Release date: November

You already know and love Sackboy, the cute and cuddly commando from previous LittleBigPlanet adventures. But the third edition of the ingenious platformer introduces his friends, so prepare to fall in love with Oddsock, Swoop, Big Toggle and Little Toggle - all of whom are playable characters. Plus, your homemade Dracula outfit, lovingly crafted over previous releases, can come with you. Bloody beautiful.

Grand Theft Auto V

Release date: Spring

Yes, GTA V and GTA: Online are already the best-looking games on your old consoles. And you've probably spent tens or hundreds of hours on them combined. Better prepare to spend another hundred or so. The trailer comparisons between the PS3 and PS4 versions of the open world dominator and pop culture pisstaker are eye-wateringly amazing. And yes, your saved games are transferable. Hallelujah.

The Evil Within

Release date: October 14

Shinji Mikami, the creator of the long-running Resident Evil series, is revered by horror fans. Hopes are high he'll do the same thing with his latest project, The Evil Within. Judging by YouTube gameplay videos, he's succeeded: gamers start hanging upside-down in a butchery full of bodies. Then a maniac with a chainsaw shows up. Not for the faint-of-heart.

DriveClub
Platform: PS4
Release date: October 8

Beset by delays, hyped street-racing experience DriveClub was originally intended as a PlayStation 4 launch title. Developers have spent their extra time honing the game's social networking features, which allows gamers to work in teams of likeminded petrolheads and connect during races. They're also promising some of the shiniest cars ever seen in a game. Come in, Gran Turismo, your time is up.
