Science-fiction fans have been left drooling after a new two-minute trailer for Ridley Scott's hyped Alien prequel Prometheus hit the net over the weekend.

The trailer for Prometheus, which is released on June 7, gives fans plenty of reason to suffer through sleepless nights ahead of the film's launch.

Starring Noomi Rapace, Charlize Theron, Michael Fassbender, Guy Pearce and Idris Elba, the film follows the crew of the spaceship Prometheus as they investigate the origins of Earth.

It is set in the year 2085, and is said to be a prequel of sorts to Scott's Alien series.

Fans have been left stunned by the new trailer, with many heading online to express their excitement ahead of the film's release.

On the website of The Wall Street Journal, a commentator called Linda said the trailer looked "wild".

"Whew, that looks incredibly intense! Alien was the only movie I've ever walked out of - it was too scary! Of course I've seen it many times since, but man oh man, that was wild. Prometheus looks amazing."

And Kate said: "Seriously every hair on my arm is standing up! I have no doubt that this movie will be as exciting and terrifying as the Alien movies, and I cannot wait!"

Scott has hinted that if successful, there could be a second Prometheus film.

"It evolved into another universe," he said at WonderCon 2012. "If we're lucky, there'll be a second part. It does leave you with some nice open questions."
