He was responding to a video of 1000 musicians playing a cover of Foo Fighters' Learn to Fly in Cesena, a town of less than 100,000 near Italy's eastern Adriatic coastline.
The video has attracted more than 10 million views on YouTube over the past two days.
The performance was the culmination of a 14-month project called The Rockin'Thousand, led by 39-year-old Fabio Zaffagnini, backed by a crowdfunding campaign that raised almost 45,000 euros (A$67,476.38).
On the project's website, Zaffagnini explains that he looked for a "crazy idea" to woo the Foo Fighters back to Cesena region, where they last played in 1997.
"We have to organize something that kicks ass worldwide and can be seen by Dave Grohl," he wrote.
