Catherine Tate 'blown over' to discover she has a New Zealand fanbase

It's been ten long years since The Catherine Tate Show was last on air, but a new stage show will allow fans to see old favourites like Lauren Cooper and Nan once more.

British comedian Catherine Tate is bringing her eponymous show to Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch later this year.

While in New Zealand last week to promote the tour, Tate said she was surprised to be bringing the show — which toured the UK in 2016 — all the way to the other side of the world.

"When I did the show in the UK and the promoter said 'what do you think of going to Australia and New Zealand?' my first thought was, 'does anyone know me?'

"So I was absolutely blown over when I got here and [to] Australia, that there is an audience ... that there is what would seem to be a fanbase, which is just amazing," she says.

"I'm delighted that I can come out and bring the show to people who want to see it."

The tour has already proved successful, with LiveNation announcing yesterday that extra shows have been added in Auckland and Christchurch due to high demand.

Many British sketch shows spin-off into live tours, and Tate says she always knew she was going to get around to it ... eventually.

"I've always had a bit of cold feet about just committing," she explains. "You have to commit to [a tour] so far in advance. The theatres book out very quickly."

"It was always on the cards, and then I just said 'let's do it', so we did."

Tate describes the show as "very fast", saying she doesn't want there to be any dead moments on stage.

"I really wanted it to be that I ran off stage in one character, something happens while I get changed, and before they know it, I'm back on stage."

Based on the reaction the tour got in the UK, where she did 31 shows, Tate expects New Zealand fans will find plenty to enjoy as well.

"It's got a lot of energy, it has a lot of character, it's got a lot of laughs. I hope there's something for everyone.

"It's just a great big blast of fun."

The Catherine Tate Show will be at Auckland's Bruce Mason Centre on November 28th and 29th, Wellington's Opera House on November 30th, and the Isaac Theatre Royal in Christchurch on December 3rd and 4th. Tickets are on sale now.
