When Hill did emerge, her set caused further criticism when she performed remixed version of her hits and the sound quality and was booed by the audience.
She has only released one album in 1998, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, and an unplugged album, which may be why the revamped arrangements of her hits did not go down well with the audience.
The show only picked up towards the end when she sang Doo Wop (That Thing) but it came a little too late.
Amongst the detractors, some leapt to the singer's defence. British author Bonnie Greer posted "Btw: Sorry to see @MsLaurynHill's first show slammed on here. Unfortunately, geniuses are sometimes not up to our standards. #LaurynHill".
While another user called Babs described the performance as "art" and told fans not to complain.
The singer who is on Twitter, but appears to be an infrequent user of the social network, has remained quiet about the incident.
