Actor James Rolleston stable in intensive care two weeks after crash

Almost two weeks on from a horror crash actor James Rolleston remains in a stable condition in Waikato Hospital's intensive care unit.

And those close to the actor said it was "a waiting game" to see how well he would recover.

"He's still pretty crook," Opotiki counsellor Barry Howe told the Herald on Sunday.

"It's just a matter of waiting now."

Two of Howe's grandsons were close friends with the young star and had gone to visit him last week.

Rolleston, 19, was seriously injured when the car he was travelling in hit the Otara Bridge on the eastern side of Opotiki on July 26.

He was cut from his car and taken to Tauranga Hospital in a serious condition before being transferred to Waikato Hospital.

Police investigations into the cause of the crash were ongoing, a police spokeswoman said.

Another young man, who Howe previously described as being "best of buddies" with Rolleston was also hurt in the crash, however not seriously.

It was not yet confirmed who had been driving.

Rolleston's breakout performance in Taika Waititi's 2010 movie Boy kicked off his career as an actor.

He also appeared alongside Cliff Curtis in the widely-acclaimed 2014 movie The Dark Horse.

Earlier this week it was revealed a movie based on the Maori love song Pokarekare Ana had been put on hold after Rolleston's crash.

The actor was set to be the male lead of the production.

Pokarekare Ana: Yeon-Ga is set in the midst of the Korean War and centres around the love story between a troubled Maori soldier and a young South Korean woman.
