The very best fresh produce buys of the week, brought you in partnership with New World.
Fresh this week: Sweet golden kiwifruit have recently joined the sharper green ones in your local supermarket — the 2019 harvest is set to be a bumper one. Kiwifruit are high in vitamin C, so useful foils for winter ills. Ripen kiwifruit at room temperature, then store in the fridge.

Local parsnips are looking good, along with swedes and turnips. Don’t bother peeling young parsnips, just give them a wash. And be stingy when you peel older ones, to help preserve the nutrients and the flavour, most of which is right below the skin.
Apple and pear season is now in full swing according to New World Fresh Expert Brigit Corson. “New season granny smith apples have arrived from the Hawkes Bay and will be beautifully crisp and tart.” Courgettes and eggplants are still good buying. “We have another couple of weeks left with local eggplants and longer still with courgettes — their season will slow as the weather gets cooler,” says Brigit.
Look out for: Jerusalem artichokes and tamarillos. "We are expecting tamarillos will start to trickle in at the end of April with price improving as supply grows with the season," says Brigit.

Moving on: Local beans will be disappearing in a couple of weeks and you'll see Australian green beans in their place to see us through until next summer. Ditto local raspberries, which have had a great run, but we expect them to be gone by early May.
