Kevin the make-up artist and hair designer
Kevin is a busy make-up artist and hair designer on TV sets. His typical work day starts with the alarm clock going off around 5am, before sunrise. Once showered and dressed he takes his dog Ginger for a walk, before bundling her in the car to take her to work either at the Blue Rose studios on Auckland’s North Shore, or one of various other studios around Auckland. By this stage he’s craving a coffee which is usually ready and waiting for him when he gets to the studio, thanks to the set assistants. Once the first actor has been made up, he has breakfast, which is supplied by the crew who also organise and supply lunch and snacks. Lucky him! He is not gluten-intolerant however he opts to be gluten-free as much as he can as he generally feels better when he is. By the time he gets home at 7pm he’s ready for a couple of wines to unwind.
6.45am A soy latte, two wheat-free slices of bread toasted with avocado, two soft-boiled eggs on top of the toast with salt and pepper. Followed by another soy latte.
9.00am Things have normally settled by now, following the morning rush. I try to drink water when I remember. One banana, a few grapes and a plum. One more soy latte depending on whether I managed to finish the other two.
Midday Hungry by this stage. Roast beef, roast potatoes, broccoli, carrots, peas and gravy.
4.30pm Bean salad for afternoon tea while I am rushing around prepping for the next episode.
7-8pm Rice crackers and hummus for dinner with some olives and two glasses of wine; I am normally relaxed by the second glass.
Nadia Lim’s nutrition quick fix
Your diet is both gluten and dairy free. Many people feel better on such a diet even though they have no medical need for it. It is fine to follow this dietary pattern as long as you are getting your recommended intake of vitamins and minerals from other sources, which you are. The soy milk in three lattes will be providing you with a good dose of calcium, though I would suggest limiting each latte to a single (not double) shot to avoid too much caffeine. Your diet is pretty good overall with adequate fruit and vegetables — you could bump up your intake even more with a simple salad at night. It’s great you are eating legumes (beans, peas, lentils and chickpeas) in your bean salad and hummus — they are high in fibre, vitamins and minerals. Good work!
