All in a day's work: Charlotte the School Principal

Charlotte the School Principal

Charlotte is in her mid-sixties and lives on her own. She likes to be at school early in the morning to get things organised. She’s never organised enough to take a packed lunch but keeps cottage cheese and crackers at school so there’s something to eat when required.

Charlotte says “I have a very limited and boring diet as there is never any food in the house. However there is always Diet Coke! I don’t think my diet is typical of the rest of the staff because they bring their lunch. Some have a real feast!”

7.30am No breakfast, 2 cups of tea at school.
10.30am Cup of coffee and/or diet coke – I can drink it all day. Morning tea birthday shout so I have 2 little bacon and egg pies.
12.30pm Another little pie – couldn't waste them! Don't eat anything else until I get home.
6pm Takeaway nasi goreng.

There’s a lot of salt here from all the processed food — bacon, cheese, pies and crackers and that’s before getting to the takeaway nasi goreng. Your salt intake will be well over the recommended daily allowance which will not be good for your blood pressure. High salt intake is strongly linked to hypertension. Your best bet is to limit the foods coming out of the factory (and takeaway store) by eating real food i.e. fruit and vegetables.

Limit the diet coke and coffees to no more than two to three a day.

A little organisation is key — keep oats at school so you don’t skip breakfast and cook up soups in bulk and freeze in individual portions to take for lunch.
